Suggested Needle Usage Information

AS A SKILLED TECHNICIAN YOU WILL DISCOVER TECHNIQUES AND NEEDLE PREFERENCES OF YOUR OWN. THIS SHEET IS ONLY INTENDED AS A GUIDE, FOR MORE INFORMATION OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE FURTHER TRAINING IN NEEDLE SELECTION, PLEASE telephone our call centre on 0845 230 1210.

SINGLE-PRONG NEEDLES (Merlin and Precision Plus)
The single prong needle requires skilful hands. Due to its sharpness, it can penetrate deep into the skin, resulting in a PERMANENT TATTOO. We do not teach with this needle or suggest you do not use it except for fine detail.

DOUBLE-PRONG NEEDLES (Merlin machine only)
The two single needles are side by side, giving a “single needle/flat effect” but allowing for skin resistance. Be sure to keep your eye on the angle in which you hold your machine or you can get a thin-thick-thin line/stroke.

TRIPLE-PRONG (Cluster/Liner)
A #3 configuration is the most popular needle choice. The triple-prong needle creates fine but distinctive lines. It is the preferred needle for all trainees when they are first learning micropigmentation technique. The three needles are in a cluster formation and whichever way the device is held the stroke is of the same density. Recommended for all facial work procedures.
Recommended for the following procedures:

  • Fine eyeliner or eyelash enhancement
  • “Hair-by-hair” eyebrow technique
  • Small beauty spots

THREE OUTLINE(Precision Plus only)
More tightly configured than the #3 cluster, suitable for outlining the lips for the crispest of lipliner. Also suitable for eyeliner and eyelash enhancement.

FOUR FLAT (Precision Plus and Merlin) & SIX FLAT NEEDLES (Merlin only)
The four/six needles are side-by-side – hence flat needles. Great care must be taken when using flat needles, but the results can be excellent. Used horizontally it can be used to shade and achieve a natural effect. Vertically used for hair simulation.

  • Good for all facial work and paramedical procedures.

FIVE/SEVEN PRONG (Cluster/Module - Precision Plus and Merlin)
The Five/Seven cluster has a very special place among highly skilled professionals. The velocity of the machine with this needle type deposits the pigment into the skin with the best penetration and end result. Recommended for the following procedures:

  • Heavily pigmented eyebrows with a blending effect
  • Full lip shading and blush techniques
  • Body Art – filling-in
  • Paramedical procedures (CPC)

FIVE/NINE MAGNUM (Precision Plus)
Two rows of flat needles intertwined. Used for shading and filling in of large areas, like the #5/7 cluster, excellent for experienced technicians who wish to work with accuracy and speed when requiring coverage.
